June Rose Roepe Aiken was born in North Dakota in 1924 and moved to New Orleans with her family in 1930 when she was six years old. She had one brother and was the daughter of German immigrants, Reverend (Anglican) and Mrs. Herbert B. Roepe. June attended Newcomb College in the 1940s and earned a Bachelor of Art in Music in 1944. She later married and had six children with Dr. David Aiken. During the time of this interview in 1990, June had been married to David for 65 years.
