Mary Hanemann Lystad (Class of 1949) majored in sociology while attending Newcomb College and later earned a master's degree in socioloy from Columbia University. She went on to complete a Ph.D. in sociology from Tulane University in 1955. Dr. Lystad was a mother of five children, a psychologist, and a children's book author. As a professional at the National Institute of Mental Health, she received a Public Health Special Recognition Award in 1983. She was the author of many professional articles where her expertise was focused primarily on children, families, and disaster services. Her books for children include James the Jaguar (1972) and Millicent the Monster (1968). She is also known for her prize-winning publication, At Home in America: As Seen Through Its Books for Children, From Dr. Mather to Dr. Seuss: 200 Years of American Books for Children (1980).
