During the 1980s, McFarland was an early force against AIDS and helped found the NO/AIDS Task Force. She went on to become a mentor for many women in epidemiology and the public health field. One accomplishment during her career in epidemiology was becoming Charity Hospital's epidemiologist and Chief of the Department of Health and Hospitals' epidemiology section. She authored a book called, "Infectional Control: Policies and Procedures" in addition to many peer-reviewed articles.
