Florence Schornstein graduated from Newcomb College in 1956 with a degree in English. She served as Director of the New Orleans' Parks Department for fifteen years, was the first female chairwoman of the Board of Trustees at Touro Infirmary, and was a co-founder of the Women's Leadership Initiative for the United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area. She worked with Save Our Schools, She has also served on the steering committee of Success by Six, as an executive member on the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board, and on Mayor Ray C. Nagin's transition team after his 2002 election. She has won several awards including 1991 President's Volunteer Award for her Parkway Partner's Program, the Hannah G. Solomon award from the National Council of Jewish Women, the Alexis de Tocqueville Award from United Way, and is listed in Who's Who of American Women and as a Woman Who Dares in the National Jewish Women's Archive. She is a two-time honoree as a New Orleans City Business Woman of the Year.
