While at Newcomb, Laura was involved in Pi Beta Phi, Newcomb Athletic Association, the Debating Association, Newcomb Debating Council, the Peace Polity Club, and the Dramatic Club. At Newcomb, she studied painting under Ida Kohlmeyer and etching under James Steg. After graduating, Frances continued painting, working in graphic art, and rediscovered etching. Mary Hanemann Lystad (Class of 1949) majored in sociology while attending Newcomb College and later earned a master's degree in socioloy from Columbia Show moreMary Hanemann Lystad (Class of 1949) majored in sociology while attending Newcomb College and later earned a master's degree in socioloy from Columbia University. She went on to complete a Ph.D. in sociology from Tulane University in 1955. Dr. Lystad was a mother of five children, a psychologist, and a children"'s book author. As a professional at the National Institute of Mental Health, she received a Public Health Special Recognition Award in 1983. She was the author of many professional articles where her expertise was focused primarily on children, families, and disaster services. Her books for children include James the Jaguar (1972) and Millicent the Monster (1968). She is also known for her prize-winning publication, At Home in America: As Seen Through Its Books for Children, From Dr. Mather to Dr. Seuss: 200 Years of American Books for Children (1980). Originally, Sandra Robertson was supposed to speak, but was unable to at the last minute. Louise McFarland, a State Epidemiologist for Louisiana, graduated from Tulane University with a master's and doctoral degree in public health. During the 1980s, McFarland was an early force against AIDS and helped found the NO/AIDS Task Force. She went on to become a mentor for many women in epidemiology and the public health field. One accomplishment during her career in epidemiology was becoming Charity Hospital's epidemiologist and Chief of the Department of Health and Hospitals' epidemiology section. In this interview conducted by Susan Tucker, Elleonora "Nonie" Moss Perrilliat McWilliams (1923-2006) recounts her memories as a student at Newcomb Co Show moreIn this interview conducted by Susan Tucker, Elleonora "Nonie" Moss Perrilliat McWilliams (1923-2006) recounts her memories as a student at Newcomb College. McWilliams discusses her memories of the athletics department, and mentions Florence Smith, Frances Bush (who formed the first Newcomb dance club), Clara Baer, and basketball at Newcomb. While attending the Newcomb School of Music, McWilliams served as student body president and as a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta, she was also a recipient of the 1909 award. After graduating in 1944, she helped found the New Orleans Geological Auxiliary and the Tchefuncta Club Estates. As an active New Orleans community member, McWilliams was involved with the Methodist church, playing piano, teaching Sunday school, and serving as a Chairperson of the WSCS. She also remained active in the Tulane community by serving as a member of the Newcomb Dance Club and on the Newcomb Dean's Advisory Council. This interview was most likely recorded upon the opening of the Elleonora McWilliams building at Newcomb. The building was funded in her honor by her husband and built to house the Newcomb Dance program. It should be noted that a third, unidentified person can be heard throughout the interview. Anne Katherine McDonald Milling graduated from Newcomb College in 1962 with a Bachelor of Art degree in European History. She earned an Master of Art Show moreAnne Katherine McDonald Milling graduated from Newcomb College in 1962 with a Bachelor of Art degree in European History. She earned an Master of Art in History from Yale University. Milling remains an active civic leader and volunteer in New Orleans. She is known as the founder of an advocacy group called, Women of the Storm, a non-partisan, non-political alliance formed in 2005. Women of the Storm was created to draw attention to the needs of a post-Katrina New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, coastal restoration, and infrastructure needs. Other community organizations that Milling participated in was the YWCA, the Junior League of New Orleans, the New Orleans Town and Gardeners, the Sewerage and Water Board, Loyola University Board of Trustees, the Archbishop's Community Appeal, Council for a Better Louisiana, the Superdome Commissions, United Way, Project Lazarus, the Ryan White Commission, the Longue Vue House and Gardens, the Papal Visit Committee, and the Metropolitan Area Committee. While at Newcomb, she was an active member of the Debate team, the Dramatic Club, the Hullabaloo, Alpha Omnicron Pi, Alpha Sigma Sigma, and Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation, Glendy Pabst wrote feature articles for the local newspaper The New Orleans Item. She later worked at The Washington Post as the copy editor, assistant editor, and reporter. She was book editor at The Washington Post from 1956-1965. Professionally, Glendy wrote under the name "Glendy Culligan." In 1963, she launched Book Week, a Sunday supplement to The Washington Post. In 1965, she became a freelance writer and reviewer, a contributor to the Saturday Review magazine and a consultant to the Brookings Institution. While at Newcomb, she was involved in Angel Flight, Pi Beta Phi, the Catholic Center, French Club, and Spanish Club. She holds master's degrees in French (1970) and Italian (1972) from Tulane, studied at Princeton, and the Sorbonne. Nell wrote the Social Scene section of The Times-Picayune for 34 years and for the New Orleans Advocate under the pen name "Nell Nolan." She has written for several other local and national publications. She taught at Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans for 22 years and at De La Salle High School and Tulane University for six years each. Nell has also acted in many local and area theaters and a few international locations. She is involved in many community, cultural, and educational boards in New Orleans. She also worked with Salvadorian immigrants and refugees to help them gain Temporary Protective Status and to help them learn English. She also discusses cultural and political differences between her native Oregon and New Orleans with respect to the racial climate of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
